World Water Day is celebrated on March 22 every year. We celebrate this day to draw attention to one of the most pressing environmental issues, "Water scarcity."

Water is life, and we can not even imagine life without water.

World Water Day raises awareness and inspires action to tackle the water and sanitation crisis.  It is about taking action to tackle the global water crisis of the 2.2 billion people living without access to safe water. It is a United Nations observance coordinated by UN-Water.

The theme of World Water Day 2023 is accelerating change. This theme aims to encourage governments, civil society and individuals to accelerate progress towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 6. To ensure safe drinking water, bathing and use of sanitation facilities for all, we need more action, ambition and innovation.

Additionally, the theme explores how to coordinate action across multiple sectors, strengthen the collaboration among stakeholders, and maximize impact.

According to National Geographic, 70 percent of the earth is covered by water but only 2.5 percent of it is fresh water, and only percent of it can be easily accessed by humans.

This means that there is only 1 percent of water on earth that is fresh water and must be shared by the whole world. So it is very important for us to keep the water supply clean.

How do we keep the water clean?

Some of these ways you can practice to keep water clean !

1. Reduce waste
Reducing waste is one example of keeping water clean. Waste disposed by humans does not only end up in landfills, but into rivers, lakes, and other water sources. Waste also pollutes groundwater, which is the source of clean water for humans. Reducing waste can be done by recycling waste and reducing the use of plastic.

2. Do not throw rubbish carelessly
Dispose of it in the bins that have been provided. Garbage that is thrown on the street is likely to be washed away by rainwater and enter waterways or rivers, which obviously pollutes the water. Also remember not to throw garbage into rivers, lakes, springs, and also into toilet and sink drains.

3. Plant a tree
Gardening trees and other plants can help keep water clean. Plant roots help filter water flowing over the ground and help the soil to absorb the water. The absorbed water will then be stored in aquifer rocks as a clean water reserve.

There are many other ways we can do to keep water clean. We can start with a simple way, by implementing the tips above. So let's create clean water and happy world water day !
