On March 13, the Biden administration approved the controversial Willow Project in Alaska. Do you guys know about the Willow project?
So based on CNN, Willow Project is a massive and decadeslong oil drilling venture on Alaska's North Slope in the National Petroleum Reserve, which the federal government owns.
Why do we need to discuss this topic? As we know that there are many pros and cons regarding this project. Like the petition, you might see it on social media as a form of rejection of this project. We have to look at the positive and negative impacts of the Willow Project. Only then can we assess whether this is a good project? or vice versa.
The area where the project is planned holds up to 600 million barrels of oil. That oil would take years to reach the market since the project has yet to be constructed.
According to ConocoPhillips, this project's advantages would create about 2,500 construction jobs and about 300 long-term jobs. ConocoPhillips estimated the $8 billion project to make around $8 – $17 billion. With drilling for oil happening within the US, gas prices would lower significantly because we would no longer have to import and buy as much oil from foreign countries.
In light of the information provided by Nagruk Harcharek, the Northern Slope people support the project via the Voice of the Arctic Iñupiat. The economic benefits are substantial to its citizens, and they have meticulously planned the project around their environment.
Conversely, the drawbacks of this project are based on Jeremy Lieb, an Alaska-based senior attorney at environmental law group Earthjustice, that The Willow Project is a vast climate threat. In addition to concerns about the fast-warming Arctic, groups are also concerned that the project could destroy the habitat for native species and alter the migration patterns of animals, including caribou.
What do you think about this willow project? Do you guys agree with this project?
